Dr. Maryam Rezaei, Empower Me Senior Analyst.
Our superstar Senior Analyst, Maryam Rezaei, was recently featured on CBC radio for a story on the hidden issue of energy poverty. Energy poverty, or energy burden, refers to households that spend too much on their household energy needs. That includes electricity as well as heating and cooling.
Empower Me is part of an energy efficiency collective made up of three sister companies, one of which, is Community Power. Community Power works alongside remote indigenous communities to co-develop and implement custom energy and housing management solutions.
Energy poverty is more common than many Canadians realize. According to Rezaei’s research, 21 per cent of households in Canada experience energy poverty or 2.8 million households. Energy poverty can have a huge impact on the people living in those households. “I think about it in terms of the kind of compromises that this forces upon people.” Rezaei said. These can include compromises in home comfort, health, and basic dignity.
Empower Me is proud to be part of this energy collective that contributes to these important conversations bringing these hidden issues to light.
